I don’t have anything cohesive to say today, so here are a few random thoughts!
I played my first Shinteki Puzzle of the Month last night! Nick and I worked together to solve it and we had a lot of fun. I figured out the subject right away, and Nick figured out the “trick” once we had all the data. Turned out I knew a lot about the subject, even those I had only heard about. Really fun puzzle by Todd Etter =) We took our time and came in at around 51 minutes.
Isn’t there something so magical about that moment when you first realize what a puzzle is about, and the subsequent moment when you confirm that your idea is correct? Sometimes it’s an a-ha flash moment, but other times it’s kind of a pit-of-your-stomach hunch and then your heart beats a little faster as you start the confirmation step.
I’ve been thinking about Professor Layton lately and whether I’m done with it. I can’t remember if I ever finished Last Specter (I think I did, but never played the London Life RPG so felt I couldn’t review the game yet), and I may never buy a 3DS and be able to play Miracle Mask. The first game, Curious Village, was so magical and new and different, but the series is starting to feel kind of tired. While Unwound Future’s ending brought me to tears, the story and characters of Last Specter made me want to turn off the game at times (with the exception of Emmy — finally, a female character in the Layton series that doesn’t get kidnapped!). The puzzles are so disparate from the rest of the game, and after four games they have become a chore. The 3D puzzles of Miracle Mask might have injected a bit of novelty here, but how long will that last? I love the Layton character, and I love the game’s charming aesthetic, but I don’t really look forward to the new games like I used to. Hm.
I bought my plane tickets for Boston last week. I am really going to the MIT Mystery Hunt!
And Mystery Hunt is only two weeks after MAGFest, which we are also officially going to for at least Friday and Saturday. January is going to be the best month ever!
There is a chance we’ll be in New York next week. Is there anything cool and puzzly/mysterious we should try and check out?
That’s all for now! Have a great weekend =)
