Website Redesign

Welcome to the long-needed redesign of Clavis Cryptica! Let me give you the grand tour.   New Host CC now runs on WPEngine, a dedicated WordPress host. Constantly fending off the endless brute force attacks and malicious file uploads that come with the WordPress territory was stressing me out. Since WordPress is all they do, WPEngine knows how to keep my site safer and deals with any security issues that do pop up, free of charge. I’m in low-maintenance blog heaven.   New Theme I used to compulsively redesign all of my websites at least once a year, so I’m…

State of the Blog 2013

This post will have not much to do with puzzles, mysteries, or games, and probably too much to do with me personally!  But it will give you an idea of what to expect from Clavis Cryptica moving forward, so perhaps worth reading. It’s been a while!  Almost a month since my last post.  The following Monday after that post, we moved into our new apartment here in Bellevue and I’ve pretty much been wrapped up in the move-in process since then. Throughout that process, I’ve had some time to think about this blog and what my perspective on it will…

Moving Week

I really don’t like taking so much time off from blogging, but being so busy means that not only do I not have time to write good posts, I don’t have time to experience anything worth writing about!  We’re moving out of our apartment on Wednesday and flying to Seattle on Saturday, so unfortunately I’m still going to be on hiatus this week =/ In the meantime, check out The Great Sporcle Puzzle Hunt, a 15-part puzzle hunt built with Sporcle quizzes that was just released yesterday. Sorry for all the down time here, and I hope to see you…

Day (or two) Off

I am on the road for Ravenchase this week, so in the meantime… Larry Hosken invites you to submit location-based puzzles for your hometown to the Octothorpean Order. If you missed Tabstop’s puzzle contest for charity (through which he raised almost $1k, wow!!), you can go check out the puzzles here.  I’m bad at doing fun things in a timely manner, so I missed the contest portion. Are you all caught up on your SnoutCasts? The Armchair Treasure Hunt Club is running a free-to-enter treasure hunt from their Facebook page next month.

Holiday Break

Happy Holidays everyone!  I’m headed home, so Clavis Cryptica will be on a Holiday hiatus until January.  If you’re feeling bored, go check out the puzzles and games on the Resources page and solve something new! =)  Take care!

Call for Guest Posts

The title basically says it all.  If anyone is interested in writing a guest post for Clavis Cryptica, contact me at admin@claviscryptica.com. Maybe you don’t have a blog, but there is a topic you’ve been wanting to write about and share with other people who are interested in puzzles, mysteries, and games.  Or maybe you do have a blog, and we can share some traffic and readership!  (Clavis Cryptica averages about 50 hits a day, so it would just be a little bit of exposure).  Or maybe you’re from a different country and want to share something cool you know…

Thankful

I’m a bit unexpectedly without internet access today (except on my phone), so a quick post today. Things I am thankful for: – People who write awesome puzzles for the rest of us to solve – The awesome and welcoming puzzling community that has shared so much with me – Josh and Ravenchase for such an amazing opportunity to do exciting creative work – All the great people who comment here and share their thoughts and knowledge with me and other readers – The fact that this blog is just a hobby and I can take some time off to…

Random Friday Thoughts

I don’t have anything cohesive to say today, so here are a few random thoughts! I played my first Shinteki Puzzle of the Month last night!  Nick and I worked together to solve it and we had a lot of fun.  I figured out the subject right away, and Nick figured out the “trick” once we had all the data.  Turned out I knew a lot about the subject, even those I had only heard about.  Really fun puzzle by Todd Etter =)  We took our time and came in at around 51 minutes. Isn’t there something so magical about…

Busy Busy Busy

I’m taking a personal day here at Clavis Cryptica.  I’ll be back Friday.  In the meantime, check out these other great puzzle-themed blogs run by CC readers! Boolean Esperanto I’m Still Alive Larry Hosken Puzzalot SnoutCast That Puzzle Guy’s Blog Or go enjoy the thrilling tale of Team BBSB and the Great America Race!  You won’t regret it.

Resources Page

You’ll notice a new tab at the top of the page today.  I’ve added a Resources page!  It seems like I’m always discovering or being recommended a new puzzle, game, blog, or event since I started this blog, and my bookmarks folder system hasn’t been great for keeping track of it all.  So instead, I’m going to start logging all of those items on the Resource page for my own purposes and to the benefit of anybody who is interested in checking out some new stuff.  I’m sure I’ve left out a ton of stuff I’ve already been told about…
