The Secret World Goes Subscriptionless

Fans of this year’s modern MMO The Secret World have been expecting this kind of news for a while — the game is transitioning to a “Pay Once, Play Forever” model.  Despite tons of hype and delivering a unique, high-quality game, TSW has struggled to compete with 2012’s other big MMO releases, Diablo 3 and Guild Wars 2, both of which were free-to-play on launch.  From what I’ve read, a lot of people feel that free-to-play is the “future” of all MMOs, and Funcom’s gamble of using a subscription-based model on the cusp of that change unfortunately hasn’t paid off. The…

A Very Brief Round-up

Only one week left in the LA Game Space Kickstarter.  LA Game Space will be a converted warehouse featuring space for exhibitions, speakers/workshops, residencies, and research labs, all about exploring the potential of games.  And it’s not just for people in LA, all the events will be livestreamed and archived online for free!  A $15 pledge gets you a pack of about a bazillion (30) exclusive indie games by designers of games including Katamari Damacy, Hotline Miami, QWOP, and Unfinished Swan (and even Pen Ward of Adventure Time!). On Wednesday, I talked about the #1reasonwhy Twitter trend.  Tweets from #1reasonwhy, #1reasontobe,…

Mini Round-up

Just a few bits of news. Real Escape Game is bringing Real Escape Room to San Francisco next month!  This sounds like a more faithful interpretation of the online escape the room games, where you and up to 10 other people are actually trapped inside a normal-looking room and must find the clues to escape.  Starts December 14th in Japantown, I hope someone goes and gives a full report! Via BoingBoing, the remains of a carrier pigeon from World War II were found recently, and with a coded message attached to the leg!   So far, Britain’s cryptologists are stumped.…

Traveling today, but here are a few games and links and things I’ve been gathering up.   Great American History Puzzle – a Smithsonian Magazine puzzle designed by Ken Jennings The Great American History Puzzle is “a multi-step, cryptographic history puzzle” that explores different codes and ciphers used throughout American history.  It’s designed by famous  Jeapordy champion Ken Jennings and has a grand prize that includes a trip to D.C. and a special Smithsonian tour.  Sounds interesting!   The Room – a mystery/puzzle game for iOS devices The Room describes itself as “a physical puzzler, wrapped in a mystery game,…
